my birthday

So I had a birthday last month.

(Yes, last month. This is one of those half-finished posts I mentioned wanting to finish...)

Keith had been working out of town for four weeks, and my birthday was at the start of the first week that he was back. He offered to stay home instead of going to work with his dad that day, but I said no, that I would be fine, that I was just happy to have him home that night.

But then I woke up on the morning of my birthday and I thought, but it's my birthday! And so I called him, couldn't reach him, called his dad, and his dad had him call me. And I said, um, I know I said I didn't mind if you went to work, but did you know that today is my birthday? And, um, is it too late to ask you to stay home?

So he laughed and came home.

And he brought home M&Ms, which the kids call "M-O-Ms," and we made a chocolate cake, and Priscilla and Abraham decorated my cake for me. Abraham had never had an M&M before, so he just held it for a long time and eventually put it down, I think. Keith put a frosting ring on the cake that looked like my wedding ring. And the candles were 21 + 3 + 4 to equal 28.

After we ate some cake, Keith surprised me with a dinner date to the Mexican restaurant in town. Ezekiel came along with us and was not extremely impressed by the whole experience, but he wasn't terribly unhappy about it either, so that was nice. We had a lovely time. And Keith gave me a book I've been wanting (The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson) and overall, a simple day with my family was a very nice way to mark turning one year older.

  1. so glad you had a happy birthday! I LOL'd at the 'but it's my birthday!' part.
