good news and bad news

The good news: Keith was able to work today!

Probably not going to happen tomorrow, as it is raining just now, but at least he was able to work today. This was particularly special to me because I went for a walk with Rilla and Abraham yesterday afternoon, and I told Rilla while we were walking that we needed to pray for the ground to freeze so that Daddy could go to work. I prayed and she prayed (she loves to pray, by the way... something which blesses my socks off but which I try not to praise her for overmuch, lest she thinks her pretty prayers make her righteous... hopefully that makes sense without me having to explain further at the moment). Within a few hours, the temperature dropped way down and stayed below freezing until early this afternoon! So cool.

The bad news: Our car is toast.

Apparently, the oil pump drive gear split in half, which ruined the timing belt and sent shards of metal throughout the engine. The extent of the damage is unclear, but we'd have to fix the timing belt and oil pump before a compression test could be done to determine how much work the engine needed. It would almost certainly cost more than the value of the car to repair it all.

So. That has never happened to us before. We're still processing. Selling our car for parts or scrap metal and then either 1) driving our moldy, 25-year-old Jeep [which currently isn't starting] for transportation or 2) buying a super-cheap and likely unsafe beater car or 3) going into more debt for a decent used car... these just aren't things that we were thinking about a week ago, and they are a teeny tiny bit overwhelming at the moment.

  1. The Lord knows your need. Just the other night, Bible study was about how He is always working behind the scenes, even when it's something like this. This happened for a reason.
I hope it's ok if I say a prayer for you here.
Lord I thank you for leading me to my sister in Christ in her time of need so that I may lift her up in prayer. Lord I know there is a reason this happened and that if we trust in You,You will turn these lemons into lemonade somehow and be glorified. Maybe this season will be short, maybe it will be long, either way I pray you draw her and her family nearer to You and give them strength and grace to get through this time. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

  2. We're on our 4th car in 7 years of marriage. Our first car (which I think would qualify as an antique now) died in the Davidson parking lot after Jeff barley made it home from picking up Chinese take-out (there were blue clouds of smoke), and it remained in the parking lot for a good 10 months before we got it towed to its final resting place. We chuckle about all this now. Anyhow, God has always provided the right vehicle at the right time for us and I know He will for you, too.
